BKW Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark A. Pitterson has announced his retirement from the district at the end of the 2021-22 school year. His retirement was announced effective June 30, 2022 at a special meeting of the Board of Education Monday night (Feb. 7).

Dr. Pitterson was hired as BKW Secondary School Principal in October, 2016. He has worked in education for 35 years, serving as a teacher of English in Kingston, Jamaica, and on Long Island, New York. He also spent a year and a half working in education in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Prior to coming to BKW he worked as an assistant principal for six years and as a principal for three years on Long Island.

He says he is looking forward to a “different daily routine,” in retirement, and hopes to spend his new time reading, writing and traveling. What he will miss the most about BKW are the students.

“Many of them remind me of a much younger me,” Dr. Pitterson said. “Some remind me of my children when they were teenagers. On a whole, the students kept my mind busy. They are the reason why I chose this profession and they are the the ones I will miss most. I also want to thank the entire BKW community for the privilege and honor to have been a part of their lives.”

The district will begin a search for his replacement in the spring. More details will be announced at a later date.
