The 2023-24 school year marked the return of archery classes for the secondary school. Classes were suspended during the pandemic and are now finding their place in the physical education (P.E.) curriculum for seventh and eighth-grade students. The archery unit was first introduced to BKW’s P.E. department in 2016 by the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), which provided the necessary National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) lessons to certify our coaching staff.

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) is a cooperative effort between state conservation departments, school systems, and private organizations to help engage young citizens in outdoor activities and participate in the enduring sport of archery. Since then, our students have continued to enjoy the introduction to a new sport and the responsibility this class provides them in their physical education classes.

“We are enjoying the archery classes and feel our students are gaining new opportunities to expand their experiences during their P.E. classes,” said BKW Health and Physical Education teacher Ms. Gorman.

Participating students get introduced to the safety component of using archery equipment, which are compound bows with up to 20 lbs. of pressure with metal tip arrows. Once students’ complete safety practices, they begin practicing with string bows before switching to their day-to-day archery equipment. The classes allow students to learn the proper techniques to successfully hit their targets while learning about the safety and responsibility of archery.

Job well done!
