Q&A Capital Project: Roof replacement

As we move towards the capital project vote on Monday, November 10, we would like to share some simple Q&A to keep our families engaged and aware of what our community stakeholders will be voting on in the coming weeks.

Question: Why does the district need to replace the roof on the elementary and secondary school?

The lifespan of a rubber roof is, generally, 15 years.  This majority of this roof has been on the building for over 20 years and is well past its projected lifespan.

Question: How was the need for a new roof identified?

The structural concerns with the roof were identified during the work of architects completing a Building Conditions Survey.  This survey is completed, by regulation, every five to ten years.  While roof concerns were identified ten years ago, the infrastructure has deteriorated further, indicating it as a first priority concern during our most recent Building Conditions Survey submitted to NYSED in the spring of 2025.

Question: What is the fiscal impact of this project?

The overall estimate for this project is $5.142 million dollars. This project is fully aidable by the New York State Education Department at the district’s building aid ratio of 79.2%. This project will cost residents without the STAR exemption approximately $9.08 per year per $100,000 of assessed property value.  For those residents who receive the basic STAR exemption, the cost will be approximately $6.00 per $100,000 of assessed value.  For those receiving the enhanced STAR exemption, the cost is approximately $2.66 per $100,000 of assessed value. If you do not know if you receive the STAR exemption, you can contact your local assessor’s office.

Question: What is the timeline for the proposed project?

  • November 10, 2025- The project will be voted on by local residents.
  • November- December, 2025: Project materials will be sent to NYSED for final approval.
  • February, 2026: The project will be put to bid to ensure the most competitive pricing.
  • Spring, 2026: Second shift roof work will commence.
  • Summer, 2026: Full-time roof work commences with work expected to be completed by September 2026.
