The District’s proposed operating budget for the 2025–2026 school year reflects a strategic and fiscally responsible approach, totaling over one million dollars less than the current 2024–2025 budget. Informed by community feedback from the previous budget cycle, district leadership prioritized targeted reductions that preserve the integrity of student programming while continuing to support our mission of preparing students for both college and career success.
Consistent with regional and statewide trends, overall school enrollment has declined over the past decade, with rural districts especially impacted. In response, school systems have been challenged to maintain high-quality educational offerings while responsibly reducing staffing levels. Over the past several years we have proactively engaged in long-term planning to “right-size” our district through natural attrition. This year alone, we have implemented reductions totaling more than $900,000, achieved by strategically redistributing responsibilities among our talented staff. This ensures that students continue to benefit from robust learning opportunities, despite staffing changes.
In addition to internal efforts, district leaders have collaborated with administrators from across the region to explore shared services and broader operational efficiencies. For example, BKW currently shares a teaching position with a neighboring district and plans to partner on a shared social worker position in the upcoming school year. Discussions are also underway to pursue additional cooperative services among greater Capital Region districts.
This year’s budgeting process involved a meticulous review of every line item to ensure that reductions are thoughtful and aligned with student and family needs. As a result, some initiatives previously funded through ESSER and ARP allocations, such as the Bulldog Club and after-school activities are not able to be carried forward. Budget adjustments reflect a commitment to sustainability while continuing to deliver essential services and opportunities to our school community.
