Elementary students make ‘blooming’ connection with high school peers

This fall, fourth-grade elementary students joined forces with Mrs. Kehrer’s Floral Design class. Through that course, elementary students expanded on their recent lesson plans about the structure of plants and animals. Recently, they had been studying the four core functions: survival, growth, reproduction, and behavior.

During the Floral Design class, students were provided with an in-depth perspective on plants while applying their classroom knowledge. Both groups of students dissected alstroemeria flowers and learned about the function of the plants and their role in the environment. Students then took a campus trip to locate additional types of flowers and used their recent experience to identify those plant structures. The collaboration provided both groups of students with a shared experience from the classroom to the real world.

Nothing beats a collaboration featuring Mrs. Kehrer's secondary students and some of our elementary fourth-graders.
