Elementary students’ kick-off effort to support Blankets of Hope

This week, elementary students will begin an important project that builds creativity with classroom activities. The district is participating in Blankets of Hope, which donates blankets to homeless shelters. BKW students will be donating 200 blankets to area homeless shelters to not only protect them during colder weather but also share positive messaging. Students will create a picture or a short letter to accompany the blankets prior to delivery. Over the years, Blankets of Hope has partnered with over 500 schools to donate over 150,000 blankets and handwritten notes to those in need. You can learn more about their mission here.

The project is connected to the district’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) approach. PBIS is a simple process that engages students to establish a positive school culture while becoming better individuals. As part of the PBIS approach, district administrators and teachers introduce conversations surrounding areas that students can begin to understand in their daily experiences in school, such as Good Citizens, Respectful, Responsible, Ready to Learn, and being Super Safe.

In addition, special shout-out to Kindergarten Teacher Mr. Moss for working with Blankets of Hope and getting the 200 blankets to donate to our local area homeless shelters.

As students complete their projects for Blankets of Hope, the district will feature some of their letters and artwork with our community. Stay tuned!
