Today, the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Athletic Department announced upcoming changes to the boys’ varsity basketball schedule for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons. As we continue to recognize and celebrate the 2025 Class C championship, the district has received permission from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) to enter into a two-year reprieve from league scheduling for the upcoming seasons. The district’s boys’ basketball team will now move towards an independent schedule for the upcoming varsity basketball season.
What does this mean?
- After an undefeated season which culminated in a state championship, the boys’ basketball program is seeking to expand their options and challenge themselves with a series of high level opponents and prestigious tournaments. This decision was made with the approval of fellow WAC athletic directors. The team will continue to play several games against local opponents such as Bethlehem Central School District, Greater Johnstown School District, Green Tech, Saratoga Central Catholic School, Schoharie Central School District, and Voorheesville Central School District.
- The WAC constitution requires teams seeking an independent schedule to commit for two years to this arrangement. Other WAC schools have taken this path in the past to improve their competition or play a less challenging season with an inexperienced team.
- A complete schedule is being reviewed this summer and will be released once finalized. The boys’ modified and JV teams will remain on the WAC schedule. The varsity team will still qualify for the Section II Class C championship and potentially qualify for the NYSPHSAA Class C tournament.
“We are excited to enter this new chapter for our student-athletes,” shared Athletic Director Mr. Galvin. “This process was carefully planned, and all considerations were made to our players, their families, and our school community. As scheduling continues to be finalized, we are looking forward to this two-year era of the basketball program and its impact on our district.”
