Dear BKW Families,
As the beginning of the school year quickly approaches, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to all of our returning families and to those who are joining the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District this year. I hope your summer was filled with relaxation and memorable moments and that you are feeling recharged and excited for the year ahead. I look forward to hearing about your summer adventures when we come together again in just one week.
The start of a new school year often brings a mix of emotions: eagerness and enthusiasm, as well as a bit of nervous anticipation. It’s perfectly natural for students to have questions or concerns, whether about classroom locations, seating arrangements, or simply what to expect concerning daily routines and procedures. To support a smooth transition, we are once again partnering with our wonderful PTA to host Welcome Back Night on Wednesday, August 26th, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. During this evening, students in grades one through eight are invited to visit their classrooms, drop off supplies, and take a self-guided tour of the building. This event offers a valuable opportunity to ease first day jitters and start the year with both confidence and a lighter backpack.
Earlier this summer, I shared information via Parent Square and our district website about our new Distraction-Free Learning Policy. In alignment with state requirements, our district has adopted guidelines to ensure that internet-enabled personal devices are not in use during the school day. Our students are expected to keep their devices securely stored in their lockers throughout the school day. Combination locks are available upon request from the main office.
To help maintain a secure and respectful environment, we ask students not to share their locker combinations or allow others to access their lockers. We recognize that this policy change may be an adjustment for some, and we deeply appreciate your support in upholding this policy in the interest of focused and meaningful learning.
One of our primary goals this year is to strengthen the sense of belonging and connection each student feels within our school community. It is essential to us that every student feels seen, supported, and valued for who they are, and that they feel empowered to make thoughtful, positive choices. To support this, we are proud to introduce the Second Step curriculum, led by our school counselors, which helps students develop strong social-emotional skills, navigate challenges, and foster meaningful peer relationships. In addition, I am thrilled to share that we have added a part-time school social worker to our team this year. This valuable resource will enhance our ability to support students and families in accessing the tools they need for personal and academic success.
As always, thank you for your continued support and trust. I am extremely excited for the new school year and all the possibilities it holds for our students and staff.
In partnership,
Mrs. Kane
