Several of our FFA members recently showcased their skills and expanded their knowledge at the 101st New York State FFA Convention in Buffalo, New York. The multi-day event focused on developing leadership skills, exploring agricultural career pathways and engaging with the community.
The trip began at Niagara Falls, where students studied the natural resource while aboard the Maid of the Mist. In addition to exploring the region, students participated in career workshops, attended general convention sessions and listened to keynote and retiring officer addresses. Four BKW chapter members were selected to serve as official delegates, and had the opportunity to debate and vote on committees and legislation that will impact FFA members statewide.
BKW students competed in several Career Development Events, and brought home several accolades. The Junior Quiz Bowl team, composed of Lily Biance, Daniel O’Connell, Gavin Quinn, and Owen Quinn, finished second out of 37 competing teams, while the the Floriculture team of Rena Bradt, Karleigh Kehrer, Starr LaTorre, and Abby Peck finished eighth out of 68 teams statewide.
Individually, Rena Bradt and Karleigh Kehrer were the second place and fifth place individual, respectively, out of 300 competitors. Karleigh was awarded $250 to fund her project, delivered as a “Shark Tank” presentation for the judges. Lily Biance was also honored with a prestigious NYS FFA Jacket Award, recognizing her outstanding promise as a future agricultural leader.
