Roof Project: Providing safe spaces for learning

Dear BKW Community Members,

I’m writing to share important information about the upcoming capital project vote on November 10. This proposal addresses critical infrastructure needs across our district, specifically the full replacement of the roofs on both the elementary and secondary school buildings.

Both roofs are well beyond their intended lifespan and are showing significant signs of deterioration. Despite the outstanding efforts of our maintenance staff to make repairs over the years, these roofs are now failing and pose a risk of disruptive and costly internal damage if not replaced promptly.

The estimated cost of the project is $5.142 million dollars, with construction planned to begin in the spring of 2026. If approved by residents, plans will be submitted to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) for review in the coming weeks. We anticipate soliciting bids from roofing contractors in February 2026, a timeframe that helps us secure the most competitive pricing.

To minimize disruption to students and staff, initial roofing construction will begin via second shift work during the early spring. Full daytime construction will take place over the summer of 2026, with the entire project scheduled for completion by the fall of 2026.

This investment protects the significant improvements our community has already made to our schools. It will ensure that students continue to learn in safe, healthy, and structurally sound buildings and that our roofs remain secure and weather-tight for at least the next 30 years.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our schools and for taking the time to stay informed about this important project.

In partnership,

Mrs. Kane
