Can space be the new radish farming frontier?

BKW students are working for NASA. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden selected BKW to participate in their Growing Beyond Earth Challenge, which calls for students to conduct a series of experiments to find the perfect food plants for astronauts.

During the challenge, students collect and work with data to determine which crops produce the most nutritionally valuable food that can grow while on long-distance space travel. This year, radishes were selected as the focus of their study.

BKW’s students will complete a research proposal, two trials and a research presentation for NASA. They will combine what they learn in Michaela Kehrer’s agriculture classes with the state’s Next Gen Science standards to collaboratively work through the various phases of the challenge.

Students will also have the opportunity to virtually chat with NASA scientists about the project at several points throughout the year.
