BKW Schools has promoted Bonnie Kane as its next Secondary School principal following the upcoming June 30 retirement of Dr. Mark A. Pitterson. Kane was appointed to the position by the Board of Education at their Feb. 28 meeting.

Kane has been an educator for 15 years and came to BKW in 2016. She was a grade 8-12 English and social studies teacher until her most recent appointment in September as BKW’s Career and College Readiness Coordinator.

“It is an absolute honor to be chosen to lead the talented staff and students in the Secondary School and to be able to provide an encouraging and supportive culture for learning and individual growth,” Kane said. “I look forward to a continued partnership with my colleagues, parents, and community members to offer students the educational foundation needed to be successful in the career of their choosing and grow to their full potential.”

Kane’s roles as a classroom teacher and Career and College Readiness Coordinator have solidified her core philosophy that all students deserve a positive and engaging learning environment. Her work with the community and her colleagues in the district has helped to bring numerous new opportunities to students, helping them to pursue their individual passions.

“Bonnie has consistently demonstrated skills we believe to be critical to future success,” said Dr. Timothy Mundell, BKW superintendent of schools. “She is committed to our students, colleagues, and the community.”

Kane earned a Bachelor of Science in Adolescent Education, majoring in English and social studies from SUNY-Oneonta, and a Master of Science in curriculum development and instructional technology from the State University at Albany. She most recently graduated from SUNY Stony Brook with a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational leadership.

Dr. Pitterson announced his retirement as BKW Secondary School at the end of the 2022-22 school year. He was hired as principal in October, 2016, and has worked in education for 35 years.
