Charting the course for student success

A look at the data that drives a BKW education

BKW instruction – the academic experience of every student in our care – is driven by numbers. And the trend is that we’re making great strides in many key areas.

At a recent Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Timothy Mundell outlined the progress we’re making in student performance, detailed the recent, tumultuous, history of education reform, and gave some insight as to the future of BKW academics.

BKW’s progress in comparison to similar districts has been positive. Our 2016 Grades 3-8 ELA state test scores are slightly behind the state average, but ahead of many similar districts in the area. We fare even better when it comes to Grades 3-8 Math scores.

In the Secondary School we’ve introduced strategies like Academic Study Labs, ELA/Math Coaching, cross-content planning and activities, and a move toward more project-based experiences. This will help us support our students most likely to struggle and bolster the 74 percent of Advance Placement students who receive college credits in high school.

“I’m very excited about these outcomes,” said Mundell. “We’ve been very proactive in our efforts to increase student performance. We’re really appreciative of the community’s support of the 2016-17 budget that has allowed us to introduce new programs and academic supports to help our children be the best they can be.”
