BKW's Cross-Country Teams prove they're all-stars

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Boys and Girls Cross-Country Teams both won the Western Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday at Ft. Plain. The boys were the best of the seven team field, outdistancing the next best team by 31 points. The girls were equally impressive, winning by 41 points over second place Galway.

Girls cross country all-starsThe girls were led by sisters Courtney and Allie Tedeschi, who finished first and second. It was Courtney’s fourth consecutive league championship. Senior Abby Swint placed third and freshmen Shannon Quay placed fifth. Kristen Bassler, Jessica Rue, and Samantha Flavell all placed in the top 15.

“The girls ran great today. To have four girls in the top five at the league meet is impressive. It seems like we’re just beginning to hit our stride as a team. I think this team is ready to do big things at the Sectional and State level,” said head coach Bill Tindale.

The coach said he was also pleased with the girls modified team, which won behind the second and third place finishes of Karley Audino and Annielaura Shafer.

“It will be exciting to add a few of the eighth graders to an already successful group next year,” Tindale said.

boys cross country allstarsThe boy’s team continued to show why they are ranked No. 2 in New York State. Sean Reynolds and Derek Struck placed first and second, while Connor Devine placed fourth.

“These guys are one of the top trios in all of Section 2,” said Tindale. “They’re coming on strong at the right time.”

Junior Adam Forti placed eigth, Logan Flavell eleventh, Dominic Woodmansee twelth, and Taylor DellaRocco fourteenth. The boys JV team achieved a perfect score by taking the top five places. Elijah Murphy, Lukus Becker, Ben Becker, Ryan Bellinger, and Alex DeLong paced the Bulldogs. Alex Chauvot, Ken Binder, Kyle Anderson, Matt Steadman, Nick Bernard, Joey Staubach, and James Lounsbury finished their seasons with great races.

“I am very excited to see what the underclassmen do next year,” said Tindale. “They really impressed me today!”

Thirteen Bulldogs were named to the league all-star team by virtue of their performance at the league meet.

“To my knowledge, no program in our league has ever had that many all-stars in one season, at least not in my 17 years here” said Tindale. “It’s amazing what happens when young people work hard and push each other.”

The team has a week to prepare for the Sectional meet on Friday, Nov. 4.
