Saint Rose senior and 2007 BKW alumni Cara Swain has been teaching BKW students in Judy Tambasco’s first grade class about good nutrition as part of her role as student teacher.
Swain
is wrapping up her seven-week stretch working with the children on a
nutrition unit that included lessons on healthy eating, the food plate,
exercise and more.
“We had a tasting with food from all the groups,” she said. “That was fun.”
She also led the first grade class during a performance on smart eating choices during the recent Bulldog Early Show.
“I am so proud of them. They did so good! It was wonderful,” Swain said. “After the show, they still wanted to practice the song.”
As part of the unit, Deb Rosko, BKW’s Food Services Manager, came to talk to the students about what goes in to creating a balanced menu.
“The lunch that will be served on Nov. 8 was picked by this class,” Swain said.
The students chose barbecue ribs, rice and fresh carrots for lunch.
Saint Rose requires its students to complete a service learning project. To meet her requirement, Swain worked with the students to create a visual menu board for the cafeteria. Pictures of the day’s lunch item choices will be displayed and it will be Mrs. Tambasco’s students’ responsibility to update it daily.
“We
took pictures of what was for lunch every day and the kids did all the
typesetting,” Swain said.
The board will be on display starting next week.
Rosko submitted an article to Focus magazine on the lunch board project. It will appear in the December edition.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Tambasco’s class worked with students from Mrs. Zellin’s fourth-grade class to learn about graphing. Both classes were polled on their favorite cafeteria food. The students were paired up – one from each grade – and used the polling data to create graphs.
Swain, who hopes to teach locally when she graduates, said she enjoyed her time here and wishes she could stay.
“I
love first grade,” she said. “They teach me and I teach them.”
Tambasco said Swain did a wonderful job with the children.
“What I really enjoyed is hearing the comments the kids make through Cara. They have a great sense of humor and she sees that,” she said. “She’s been excellent. She’s great at relating to the students on a personal and professional level.”
