Students returned to BKW Secondary School this year to find several changes to the building as a result of summer construction as part of the district’s capital project.
A new wing has been
completed that includes new locker rooms, coaches’ offices, storage
areas, and the weight room/fitness center. New bathrooms and a staircase
to the second floor have been installed, as well as an elevator that
leads to the weight room, and a new backstage area in the auditorium.
New flooring in two wings of the building, new auditorium seating, a propane field behind the school, a new furnace and controls, new lobby flooring and solar panels have also been installed. The driveway and parking lot have also been refinished.
Asbestos abatement has also been completed throughout the building.
“The fitness center is finished and is just awaiting equipment, which is expected to arrive at the end of October,” Secondary School Principal Tom McGurl said, adding that the new gym is expected to be finished in time for basketball season.
The cafeteria and the new tech center are under construction and are on time for target completion in 2012.
