Team raises $1,000 for Power of Pink Tournament

The BKW Ladies Volleyball program has had a busy season.

Currently 8-1 in the WAC and in first in the WAC South by 4 full matches, the team has also been busy helping others when not dominating the court.

On Sept. 28, the team wore itself out raising funds to strike out at breast cancer by performing more than an hour of spiking drills to raise money for the Power of Pink Tournament, which was held on Oct. 1 at Queensbury High School.

The team's 10 members collected both flat-rate donations and per-kill donations for all the kills they achieved on the 28th. The total collected was $986.65. An additional $13.35 from the coach made final total $1,000.

The whole tourney raised just short of $12,000, with the Bulldogs being named the fifth highest fundraising team out of 16 teams present.

On tournament day, the ladies and their coach donned pink shoelaces and pink t-shirts for the cause. After a good start beating Class AA Saratoga in game 1, the squad then lost three in a row against bigger schools, and split with Fort Edward. Seeded in the Bronze pool, the Lady Dawgs swept WAC North foe Saratoga Catholic, then swept Section II Class C powerhouse Lake George to win the Bronze Pool championship.

The ladies took home souvenirs of their commitment to finding a cure and were even able to make gifts of some of the Power of Pink items to their annual mascot and inspiration, seventh grade English teacher Katy Keyser.

In tournament play so far this year, the team has defeated bigger schools such as Amsterdam (class AA), Mohonasen (Class A), Ichabod Crane (Class A), Saratoga (Class AA), Amsterdam again, and Clonie (Class AA). In the WAC league, the squad has suffered only one loss, losing 2 sets to 3 against defending league champion Galway.
