High school students start Snack Bar at elementary

High school students sell snacks at the elementary schoolLisa Amigo-Nolan’s high school skills class is gaining life skills and satisfying the cravings of BKW fifth and sixth graders by running a snack bar in the elementary cafeteria during select lunch periods.

“Food Services Manager Deb Rosko came up with the idea.” Nolan said. “I asked her for some job ideas for our group and she came up with the snack bar.”

The students set up a stand and sell fortune cookies (25 cents), fruit chews (30 cents), granola bars (40 cents) and chips (75 cents) during fifth and sixth grade lunch periods on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Profits go to the BKW Food Services. The students are learning to add up money amounts, make change for the orders. They also have to keep inventory, count in a till of money, fill out a deposit slip and make a deposit.

“Counting coins in a workbook is difficult, but to be able to count real money is a valuable learning experience,” Nolan said.

During the years, students in Nolan’s class had many hands-on opportunities including selling slushies to students and bagels to faculty and staff.

“Most of the students look forward to the change in the day,” Nolan said. “They like the hands on learning!”
