Parents make their way to class at the 2011 BKW Secondary School Open House.
Parents of BKW middle and high school students had the tables turned, at least for a few hours, as they had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of their child during BKW’s 2011 Secondary School Open House last night.
The event kicked off with a welcome assembly from Principal Tom McGurl and guidance Counselors Karen Corso and Annette Landry.
Parents then had the opportunity to experience an abbreviated version of their child’s school day, as they ventured off to have 10 minute “classes” in nine periods. During each class time, teachers gave an overview of the course to parents and offered some examples into topics covered and some assignments the year might hold.
Parents were also given the opportunity to visit the nurse’s office and the library, see the newly completed locker rooms and weight room, and sign up for BKW Connect Parent Portal.
The BKW Teachers Association handed out apple cider and eco-friendly pencils and were available to answer any questions from parents.
BKW PTA and BKW sports boosters representatives were also available, encouraging parents to join and supplying information about the organization, and BKW teacher Patricia Wachtel provided information about the student banking program.
Students also played an important part in last night’s event. Volunteers served as “the bell ringer,” announcing when it was time to move to the next class; manned the refreshments table; and volunteered as babysitters.
The BKW Cheerleaders collected monetary donations for Schoharie and Middleburgh and lead the younger children in games while their older siblings and parents participated in Open House activities. Students also collected money for the Anthony Hill Scholarship by selling pennants and promoting the first annual Wyatt’s Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament.
