Mrs. Mahoney’s first-grade class teamed up with the Elementary Student
Senate to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House charity by selling
hearts and carnations for $1. This year, they sold over 450 of them.
"I got started helping out the Ronald McDonald House about five years ago," Mahoney said. "A young relative was very ill and his family spent many months at the Ronald McDonald House in Boston. When I heard how they were helping out with their stay I thought I would like to return the favor with running the hearts for sale."
Two years ago, the elementary students raised around $230. Last year, they met their goal of selling around $300 as a district.
"The kids did an excellent job this year," said BKW
elementary school nurse Colleen DeMuth, "the elementary students raised
$478 during the carnation and heart sale, which is about $175 more than
last year's total."
