Lights, Camera, Literacy

Encouraging elementary students to step away from the television and tune into a book instead is not an easy feat. The Albany Tulip Queen and her court are attempting to do just that by offering a unique program to the schools of Albany County called "Lights, Camera, Literacy." In this program, students get the opportunity to hear a new story and come up with their own endings to the plot of the book.

One of the members of the Tulip Queen's court is none other than a BKW alumna, Marjorie Adriance. Marjorie helped bring the 2011 Albany Tulip Queen, Karen Colehour, to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo school district for "Lights, Camera, Literary" on Jan. 10. With a member of her court, Katie Headd, the Tulip Queen read a story to second grade students and assisted teams of children in creating and acting out their own skit to portray the end of the book.

"This program gives our students a chance to be creative, see how reading can be interactive and learn to work in teams." said Brian Corey, the BKW elementary school principal.

After the students presented their skits in front of the whole group, Karen and Katie read the real end of the story and engaged the students in a discussion that compared and contrasted their story endings with the real one.

"Any creative approaches to instilling literary        analysis at this young age are a wonderful thing to encourage." Corey continued, "We thank Karen and Katie from coming and thank Marjorie for supporting this kind of creative learning at her alma mater."

"Lights, Camera, Literacy" takes places twice a month at various schools within Albany County in an attempt to enhance the mayor's literacy program. For more information please contact Karen Colehour at colehourk588@strose.edu.
