Students take virtual fieldtrip to zoo
After
sharing a magical class exploring International versions of Cinderella,
Mrs. Tiffany’s second grade class once again paired up with freshmen
volunteers, English teacher Ms. Rys and Librarian Mrs. Davis on June 22,
when the students took a virtual field trip to the Smithsonian Zoo.
The second graders returned to the high school library, where they spent the day with their ninth-grade buddies, who were not required to be in school at the time but volunteered to come join a morning of exploration.
The students enjoyed a breakfast of bagels and juice together before breaking up into small groups to watch the zoo animals through a live feed from the museum. Each group focused on one animal, such as baby lions or the panda. When a group witnessed their animals doing something interesting, they signaled one of the teachers, who then broadcast the feed through the large projection screen, so that all in the library can see.
In
between animal watching, students participate in a scavenger hunt, play
educational games online, and shared facts they had learned about
animals such as a flamingo gets its pink color from eating brine shrimp
and that a giant male octopus can have an arm span of 25 feet.
At lunch time, the students spread out beach towels on the library floor and had a picnic before saying good bye.
