Gold's Gym gives future weight room a lift

Fitness chain donates gym equipment to athletics program

Volunteers transport gym equipmentTom Galvin and volunteers transport equipment donated by Gold's Gym to a trailer on the BKW campus, where it will be stored until construction of a new weight room is complete.

Once capital project construction is done, BKW athletes will have 900 square feet of dedicated weight room space for those all-important strength work-outs.

But how could they make good use of that space with no gym equipment?

That question weighed heavily on the mind of Co-Athletic Director Tom Galvin last month. Then, a community member happened to mention that Gold's Gym was in the middle of renovating their locations with new gym equipment. That meant all the older -- but perfectly usable -- equipment had to be going somewhere.

"And I thought -- why couldn't we use it?" Galvin said.

And use it they shall: Galvin got in touch with the fitness chain, and firmed up an agreement for Gold's Gym to donate workout equipment to the BKW athletic program.

Next on the agenda: getting the equipment from a storage warehouse in Latham to the BKW campus. A group of about 20 parents, teachers, coaches and community members -- with trailers, pick-ups and dump trucks in tow -- joined Galvin on Oct. 2 to move the equipment, which is now stored on campus in a Price Chopper trailer secured for use by members the BKW Sports Booster Club.

"Thanks to this very generous donation, the students will have quality equipment to use for training," Galvin said. "Since the community really came together to help make this happen, I'm hoping we'll be able to open it up to the BKW community as well."
