The BKW Cross Country and Track and Field teams have a new concession stand, thanks to donations of money, time and supplies from the team and the BKW community.
“We travelled around to meets at different schools last year and realized we were one of the only schools without a concession stand,” Amy Anderson, mother of team members and fundraiser organizer, said.
The teams began to raise funds for a concession stand last summer. They held a Run-a-Thon in the fall, where the first $20 from each participant went toward food for the stand. Team members and their families served food at Thatcher Park for Music in the Park last summer and were asked back to work the fall festival. The Track and Cross Country teams and their families spent a day at The Warrior Dash at Wyndam Mountain doing everything from bagging people’s personal belongings to handing out bananas to racers as they finished the dash, allowing them to make a huge dent in their fundraising efforts.
“We got rave reviews about how wonderful our children were,” Anderson said. “We’ve been asked back by the park to do their concessions for the events they have all summer long, and we will once again be participating in The Warrior Dash Fund Raiser.”
The teams and parents reached out to the community for donations and received everything from money to lumber to storage containers and a shed shell.
At the same time, the technology department at BKW began offering a construction systems class in which juniors and seniors had started building 10x12 sheds.
“We decided that instead of using the donated shell, we were going to fundraise to buy one of the sheds from the tech department,” Anderson said.
Thanks to all of the donations, the group was able to purchase a shed, make the necessary adjustments for it to serve as a concession stand and provide three picnic tables.
“It really has become this big community thing,” Anderson said, adding that different BKW sports teams as well as organizations such as the Girl Scouts have come together to help. “This is huge. It not only shows team spirit, but it shows community spirit as well.”
On Thursday, May 19, there will be an after-school Beautification Day, where anyone who wants to help can join in as the concession stand gets painted, flowers get planted, and the surrounding area gets raked and cleaned up.
The concession stand will be available for use to any of the teams — school or community — who use the field. The picnic tables are also for public use.
“It’s down there for the community to use,” Anderson said. “The kids are so proud. They worked so hard to fundraise and make this happen. We want to offer a great big thank you to everyone who helped make this dream a reality. We are so appreciative to all who contributed. We are especially thankful to Ken Woodmansee, who oversaw the entire project from start to finish and wasn’t afraid to jump right in and make the work happen.”
