4 BKW second graders win poster contest

Four BKW second graders were honored today as finalists in the county’s annual poster contest, “What a Family is to Me.”

County Executive Mike Breslin, Department for Children, Youth and Families Commissioner Colette Poulin and Executive Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services William Gettman Jr. were present during the ceremony April 27 to award the finalists and the rest of Molly Tiffany’s class for their efforts in the contest.

The contest was an opportunity for the students to reflect on the strengths of their own families and to artistically and imaginatively express their impressions and is held in April as part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and to promote healthy families.

Corey Bub's posterFirst prize went to Corey Bub for his portrayal of his family as a box of crayons that add color to his life.

“Adding color to my life means they make me very happy,” Bub said.

He received a $50 gift certificate.

Second place was awarded to Brandon Bungay, who received a $25 gift certificate.

There was a tie for third place. Jillian Hoover and Theodore Alberts each received a $15 gift certificate.

The students’ posters will be displayed by the County throughout the year at events and used in public campaigns to raise awareness about child abuse.

BKW Elementary School also received a $50 certificate (sponsored by Albany County) and Mrs. Tiffany’s class received $50, which they will use to take a field trip to have lunch with their pen pals at Mohonasen Central Schools.
