BKW Second graders get a head start in foreign language

Learning a foreign language can be fun. Just ask the second graders at BKW Elementary who participated in two after-school language programs taught by foreign language teacher Sally Baker and second-grade teacher Molly Tiffany.

For three weeks in December during Activity Period, students were introduced to French, and a second session in March focused on Spanish.

“The students love it so much,” Baker said.

In each session, students learned numbers, colors and days of the week. The teachers use a variety of aids such as music, games, flash cards and repetition to help the children become accustom to another language. They even provide snacks native to the respective countries such as roasted plantain chips and Nutella.

“Children learn a foreign language better at an earlier age,” Baker said. “It was Mrs. Tiffany’s idea to team-teach, and it worked out really well.”
