Hearts line the wall at BKW Elementary.
Students raise money for the Ronald McDonald House
Mrs. Mahoney’s first-grade class teamed up with
the Elementary Student Senate to raise money for the Ronald McDonald
House charity by selling hearts for $1. The hearts are for sale through
Feb. 14.
“I
got started helping out the Ronald McDonald House about four years ago,”
Mahoney said. “A young relative was very ill and his family spent many
months at the Ronald McDonald House in Boston. When I heard how they
were helping out with their stay I thought I would like to return the
favor with running the hearts for sale.”
Last year, the first-grade class raised $78, with a district total
around $230. This year, the goal is $100 for the first graders and $300
as a district.
“We also help out during the holiday season. and we talk about Christmas
being a time for giving,” Mahoney said. “All of the first grade
collected wish list items for the House and donated them for Christmas.
I also have a representative come visit and talk about the House. The
kids really enjoy that part.”
Retired BKW Teachers Mrs. Iannacone and Mrs. Bicteman also help with
this charity.
