BKW has a geography champion. Sixth grader Edwin Lawson was declared the winner of the local level Geography Bee.
Seventy-one sixth graders participated in the Geography Bee preliminary competition, which consisted of seven rounds of questions. From those rounds, the five students with the highest scores entered into the final competition, from which one winner became the champion.
“The students had fun trying to answer the geography questions,” moderator and program manager Mary Liz Stewart said. “Some of the questions were extremely challenging because they took us to places we had not been. Others provided two choices from which the student had to pick one answer. And still others were like old friends, because they were questions that took us to places we have already visited through our school work.”
The champion, Edwin Lawson, had to complete a 70-question written test which has been submitted to the National Geographic Review Committee, based in Washington, D.C.
If the test results of Lawson fall within the top 100 written test submissions from New York state, then Lawson will enter the state-level competition. Following the state level is a national competition.
“I look forward to participating in the Geography Bee next year,” Stewart said. “A big thank you needs to be extended to our BKW PTA for contributing the funds necessary to pay the $90 registration fee. And thanks to Mr. Corey for writing the support letter that was necessary for us to participate in the Geography Bee.”
