SNN upgraded with text messaging feature

Opt-in news alert system goes mobileSchool News Notifier

The district has upgraded its School News Notifier (SNN) service to give users the option of receiving district news and information via text message.

The district opted to perform the upgrade to give users a way to check BKW news updates on the go, help district residents stay connected to the district no matter their location, and also bring the service into compliance with current technology standards.

Since June of 2007, SNN, an opt-in e-mail news alert system, has sent out more than 550 messages to subscribers of specific news, from school closings and delays to Board of Education meeting agendas to athletic updates. Its list of subscribers has grown steadily to a current grand total of 470.

SNN is provided via the district's partnership with the Capital Region BOCES Communications Service. The district paid a one-time fee of $500 to perform the upgrade, and pays $1,000 per year to provide SNN itself.

"We felt this upgrade made good sense given today's highly connected environment," says Superintendent Dr. Paul Dorward. "What's more, this was a cost-effective way to offer residents another means of staying connected to our school district."

SNN subscribers can log in to their SNN account to enter their cell phone carrier information. All information is kept confidential. Currently, only school closings and delays will be sent via text message due to cellular carrier messaging limits. For more information, see the SNN FAQs.
