athlete says hard work, determination helps him reach his goalsSenior Brandon Galgay looked a little shy Dec. 15 during a school ceremony to officially announce The College of Saint Rose as his college of choice, and the starting point for what he hopes will be a professional baseball career.
Perhaps it was the small crowd of staff members and news media that had gathered to watch him announce his decision. But according to Jim Gillis, his soccer coach for four years, any hint of shyness never makes it onto the playing field.
"Brandon is one of the most intense athletes I have ever coached," Gillis said. "For four years, I never had to worry about him. He played his entire junior year with a broken bone in one of his hands. He is truly intense about his sports."
Galgay ramped up that intensity even more for baseball, working out for two to three hours four to five days per week, and practicing at indoor baseball facility AllStars Academy in Latham three to four days per week.
Clearly, the work has paid off: Galgay had his choice of 16 schools thanks to his exceptional athletic abilities.
He hopes his story is an inspiration to other aspiring young athletes. He also warmly acknowledged his parents for helping him get noticed by so many different schools.
"There's always a way to move up to bigger and better things," Galgay said. "It just takes a lot of hard work."

second player in BKW history to receive All-State soccer honor
Galgay is also to be congratulated for his all-state selection in soccer. The senior defender was a four-year starter for Coach Gillis. He was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America at the Section II soccer banquet on December 12. Brandon becomes the second player in BKW history to receive this honor.
