It's not just seniors who should be thinking
about graduation and college.
Freshmen, sophomores and juniors
-- it is never too early to
begin thinking about your college career. Preparing for
college early in high school will make your transition a little easier. The BKW guidance office has developed a
planning sheet to help you through each grade in high
school.
Freshmen: You can start by focusing on taking core
courses and concentrating on getting good grades.
Select BKW classes that you find interesting and that will
challenge you. Check out what high school courses are typically
required for college admission. Become involved in a club at
school or volunteer at a community organization.
Sophomores: Develop your test taking skills (standardized
tests are different from the ones you take in school) and
continue to excel in your classes. Are you involved in your
local community? College admission officers look for meaningful volunteer
or community accomplishments. Sign up for
college prep courses when you choose your electives. Your
school counselor can help you find the right ones for you.
Juniors: It’s time to get serious. Stay focused on
maintaining a good grade point average. Begin taking
standardized tests to give you an idea of where you are
academically. Start making a
list of schools that you may be interested in. Check out the
BKW guidance Web pages as you look for possible
scholarships. Your guidance counselors will be happy to help you
in this process.
