The purposes of learning a foreign language are many – it
expands one’s own world and opens up the mind to other cultures,
and thus hopefully will help to promote understanding of people
whose lives, traditions, and beliefs are different than our own.
In addition, it enables one to take part in many cultural
experiences (art, music, theater, literature) and draw greater
meaning and enjoyment from them. On the practical side, for
almost any field of employment, knowing a second language is a
desirable an sometimes essential qualification, especially in
today’s changing world.
