Career and Financial Management
Prerequisite: None
Credit: 1 Unit or ½ Unit
Length of Course: 1 Year

Type of Exam: Local (Proficiency Exam in January)
This course is designed to prepare students graduating from high
school with skills necessary to make them competitive in the
21st century job market. This will be facilitated by the use of
several techniques.
Career exploration in employment clusters: 1) Agriculture, b)
Business, c) Human Services, d) Health and e) Technology,
through the use of field trips, guest speakers and hands-on
activities.
The next several components blend into a logical progression
starting from the point at which a career is chosen, through the
pre-employment phase, successful attainment of the job, and
achieving job satisfaction. With job success comes money and
self esteem, at this point money management will be discussed.
Introduction to Tech Prep is designed and recommended for every
student as the skills taught are universal, and is the required
introductory course for the Career and Technical Education
Program.

Food and Nutrition (Core)
Prerequisite: None
Credit: ½ Unit
Length of Course: ½ Year
Grade Level: 9-12
This course helps students to apply nutrition knowledge to
everyday living. The students run a small business “Buy ‘n Fly”
in conjunction with the EIP class. This helps to develop skills
in menu planning, food purchasing, preparation and service.
Students also explore careers and employment opportunities in
the food and nutrition field. A variety of meals will be
prepared involving the basic four food groups plus international
foods. Emphasis is placed on eating healthy and cooking light.

Child Development
Prerequisite: None
Credit: ½ Unit
Length of Course: ½ Year
Grade Level: 10-12
In this course, the student will explore the physical, mental,
social growth and development of children from pre-school
through school age. Emphasis of this course is placed on giving
the students an opportunity to interact with children in a lab
experience.

Clothing & Textiles (Core)
Prerequisite: None
Credit: ½ Unit
Length of Course: ½ Year
Grade Level: 9-12
This course includes the cultural and historical aspects of
textiles and clothing, personal appearance, the design,
construction, and selection of clothing and related career
opportunities. This course can be used to satisfy 1/2 unit of
the Art mandate for students pursuing an occupational education
sequence. Students are required to complete a clothing project
commensurate to their skills. In addition, teacher provided
projects are available.

Housing & Environment (Core)
Prerequisite: None
Credit: ½ Unit
Length of Course: ½ Year
Grade Level: 9-12
The content of this course is designed to provide a foundation
for management of housing information as it relates to
individual inhabitants. Students keep a portfolio demonstrating
their ability to apply the fundamentals of color, balance and
harmony in rooms. They also design their own floor plan for the
ideal room of their choice. This course can be used to fulfill
one-half unit of the Art mandate for students pursuing an
occupational education sequence.

Human Development/Parenting
Prerequisite: None
Credit: ½ Unit
Length of Course: ½ Year
Grade Level: 10-12
This course is a New York State graduation requirement for
students entering 9th grade in 2001 and beyond. This course is
designed to examine the family unit and the changes that take
place within a family’s life cycle. The students will understand
the roles and responsibilities of parenting, prenatal
development, and the developing child . The students will also
be able to identify traits of a healthy family, and services
available when help is needed. Students will be asked to
participate in a variety of projects one of which will be “Baby
Think it Over.” The students will be given an infant stimulator
and will care for the baby for 24 hours.
