Our Mission Statement
Let the entire Berne-Knox-Westerlo community strive to do all
that it can to help our students be all they can be.
BKW has a proud academic
standing
In 2004, BKW had the highest graduation rate (99
percent) of the 53 area school
districts encompassing six counties in the Capital Region,
according to the
New York State Education Department's annual School Report Card.
Of those graduates, 74 percent earned Regents diplomas.
In 2007, 82 percent of BKW graduates pursued higher
education at two- or four-year colleges.
Standard & Poor's School Evaluation Services
rated BKW among the most academically successful and cost
effective in the Capital Region.
BKW offers
11 Advanced Placement (AP) or college-level courses,
including AP Psychology, AP Literature & Composition, AP U.S.
History and AP Calculus.
BKW has expanded its curriculum by offering
eight courses to students through the
Distance Learning Network. These courses include AP World
History, AP Microeconomics, the Holocaust and Sports Marketing.
Our students in the elementary and middle
schools are continuing this tradition of excellence. In state
tests in English, math and science that were administered during the 2003-2004
school year, the percentage of students who met or exceeded the
state standards was above the state average for each exam.
No Child Left Behind - Grades 3-8
Testing
The federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB),
passed into law in 2001, was designed to set high standards to insure that
"no child is left behind" when it comes to educational
opportunities, challenges and expectations.
The initiative mandated that beginning in 2006, all children in
grades 3-8 be tested each year in math and English. Prior to
this year, under the federal guidelines the state only tested
students in English-language arts and math during grades 4 and
8. Read

BKW State Education Report Card
Each
year, the
New York State Education Department releases school report cards
for every public school and district in the state. Based on some
key assessments taken by students in New York public schools,
the report cards provide achievement data for districts and
schools, as compared to their past years' performances and to
other similar schools.
Report cards are released each spring for the previous school
year and contain data compiled by the State
Education Department about test scores, demographics, dropout
rates, attendance rates and more.
BKW
Central School District's Report Card, along with data about the more than 4,000 public schools in the
state, is available on the New York State Education
Department Web site. Click here
